The Task

1. CONSIDER a school context for your group's programming assignment. Choose ONE primary (K-6) school from the MySchool website. Whilst the school is a real school (one that actually exists) DO NOT CONTACT THE SCHOOL.
2. CLICK on the link named Select a name and tool for your group. Register your school and preferred communication tool.
3. NEXT: Access the SHELL FOR THE POWERPOINT PRESENTATION. Complete Slide 1. Save.
3. NOW complete a context analysis for your chosen school. Use information from the MySchool site and school website (if available) to complete the tasks found on Slide 2. Relevant information about your school may include:
  • Geographical location
  • School sector
  • Year range (e.g. K-10)
  • Total enrollments 2011
  • School staff (teaching and non-teaching)
  • Student profile 2011
  • Index of Community Socio-Educational Advantage and implications
  • NAPLAN results
  • Other information relevant to teaching Health Education
4. REVIEW key points on Slide 2. Prepare a commentary to accompany Slide 2.
5. FINALLY, backup the presentation as a work-in-progress. This can be achieved by uploading a copy of your group's PPT/audio in draft to the link named GROUP PROGRAMMING ASSIGNMENT. Do not SEND FOR MARKING until the whole task is complete. Groups unable to reach this point by July 4 are strongly encouraged to complete a PROGRESS REPORT.
CONTEXT ANALYSIS

Once the group has completed the context analysis for the chosen school, synthesise your findings on this slide.

VISUAL: Show contextual factors relevant to teaching Health Education in your school.
Show by listing or construct a graphic (e.g. context map)
Acknowledge sources of information

AUDIO: Provide a commentary to explain why your group selected these factors

Tammy, I'll just post onto here for things relating to the context analysis. Hopefully we can knock it over rather quickly! Jess :D

Rather than posting on here.. we can post in discussion threads. Top right hand side.. I just did. But anyway, I'm Jess Andrews. It's a picture of me and my boyfriend.. I'm wearing a stripe dress and have blonde hair. If that helps.
Found a copy of an example analysis.. looks pretty simple!

Back again! Did we want to do Penrith or Blackett? I think either are good and obesity is easy to find something on! I'm easy.

I have put the powerpoint shell into our files and added our names. I think Penrith South is a good one as it's right in the heart of the penrith city centre with loads of bad food outlets. I also have a great quote from the Penrith City Council about obesity in the area (I put this on our home page but can copy it when we need it). I have made a start and will keep going... On a roll now.....

Yeah it sounds like a good one to do! I've started doing what you've been doing. But in dot point, because that is how I work best. How about I finish it off and I'll post it. I'm also on a roll too :D

Dot points are good. I will continue to write mine up and then we can incorporate any info I missed and then figure out whether it sounds okay or not. I'll keep posting para by para.

3/6/12 11pm
I've added the context analysis to the documents page. Feel free to look over it and change anything that needs changes. Hopefully the rest of the group will be in contact with us tomorrow and they will be able to help out. I've also added two documents related to the school to get a feel for it. Jess :D

11.30pm - feeling tired and think I need to look at this tomorrow. I have added what I've got so far (below). Let me know what you think. Can anyone check NAPLAN results and tell me whether I have quoted the info correctly. I will add more tomorrow. Thanks Jess for your thoughts and working with me tonight. I will look at the documents page and incorporate your points tomorrow too.

Penrith South Public School
Context Analysis

Penrith South Public School (PSPS) is a welcoming and friendly primary school located in Penrith Valley, Greater Western Sydney region. The co-educational school is government funded and comprises of 368 students from Kindergarten to Year 6. The gender mix is well balanced with only 20 additional girls than boys. There is a team of 24.7 full time equivalent teaching staff and 7 non-teaching staff (PRPR website). PSPS is governed by the ‘seven accountabilities of principals in effective leadership and management’ (DET), educational programs and policies, learning outcomes, student welfare and partnerships being inclusive.

The school community comprises of a low to medium socio-economic background. Results for the NAPLAN test were below the national average for Years 3 and 5 in 2008-2011 with the majority of students in the bottom quarter.

All students from PSPS currently participate in the schools sports and physical activity program and recently joined the Premiers sporting challenge. Student safety and well-being is protected through a strong pastoral care system by promoting several policies, programs and plans, including an anti bullying plan, anti racism plan, sun and road safety, internet safety and drug education. PSPS strongly promotes and supports the need to reduce health risks by adapting to the government school policy incorporating the Fresh Tastes NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy that requires canteen food that is approved by the Australian Dietary Guidelines for Children and Adolescents (DEC). PSPS has a proud sporting tradition by participating in district, state and regional carnivals, dance festivals and Primary Schools Sports Association sports, ie. cricket, soccer, netball and softball.

Based on the local context and students within PSPS, particular focus on health areas is sun safety, stranger danger, healthy lifestyle and water safety.

Looks great! We could probably add a few more things from the context analysis document, maybe something more about canteen or no. of aboriginal students as these are often factors in school obesity. All the information looks accurate (well it's the same as mine). Hopefully we will get some more input.

Hi Girls,
Blown away with the work you did last night. Been having a look through the various documents, reports and what not with regards to PSPS and i just wanted to check where the stats on school population came from because I found that there were 385 students, 195 girls, 190 boys (found from Annual School report and myschool website). There are also 47 children of Aboriginal decent and 35 nationalities represented.Having looked throught the naplan results (which took a while to understand truth be told) i found that PSPS was close to the state average for every aspect except for persuasive writing which they were below state average.I hope this helps and doesn't confuse us more:)

I can't be on at night until saturday but i have all of friday off until 6:30pm so can do as much as is needed then and I'm hoping to be able to get off work early tomorrow and hop on and do some work for maybe an hour in the afternoon. If there is anything specific you guys need assistance with or would like me to check out then just leave me a note and I can do, otherwise I'll just generally try and progress our presentation. Sorry for the lack of contact this week. Will definately try and sort something out so life works better in the coming weeks :)All the best, Melina
P.s. how would we like to distribute the audio sections? There are 6 audio requirements so one for each member but how we go about alloting them im open to suggestions. I was also thinking that I might check out some stats on the reasons for choosing obesity as our focus area. The quote from Penrith city council is great for our rationale but maybe some more facts and numbers could pad out this a bit more :) Let me know if your happy with this.

Hi Girls, Most of the info came from the My School site. Some however came from the school website. Do we need to submit the critical analysis somewhere today? Jess :D

Hi all, Just found this page great work I will try to find some more info tonight. Tanya

Hi back again. Have had a look at they myschools website, I am over my download so it is very, very slow process to look at anything on the net to the point of it driving me nuts and I have still 2 weeks to go before it goes back to normal. Anyway winge over.

Should we be including the break up of student background ie Indigenous Students being 7% and Language background other than English is 14% or do we feel this is not relevant. The other that I thought may have been relevant you have with the strong links within the wider community with the programs they offer. And the strong background in Performing Arts with a proud sporting tradition.

Index of Community Socio-education advantage
School ICSEA Value 948
Average ICSEA Value 1000 Should these stats be included???? or do you feel we have covered in a different way.

I noticed on the schools website an article titled Managing your childs weight (Dr Shirley Alexander) does this mean there may be an obstity problem

They have a Nutrition in School policy in place with the Fresh Tastes @ School NSW Healthy Canteen Strategy in conjunction with the Sugar Sweetened Drink Ban for Government Schools. Along with the Toolkit these help outline guidelines and suggested courses of action with support material to assist the school implement a whole school approach to healthier choices.

Hi Girls,
Lets work with what we have and add any other points to it that we feel are important. I agree that the stats on indigenous students and language spoken other than english should be incorporated, as should the strong links to the wider community. There is definitely an obesity problem in the area as the stats for Penrith area are over the state average for obesity. Therefore we need to educate our young children to try to help educate the parents into a healthier lifestyle. We have a great start... I think with the audio we should designate one area to each group member. I used audacity for another unit and it was very user friendly. I'm sure that's how it's spelt. Will check it out.

Just checked myschools and Year 3 & 5 were below the national average in all areas. At times not by much but they were still below. I've updated the context, please feel free to add or change details.

6/7/12

Hi Girls,

Disappointed that there has been no more progress than what I have posted for the content analysis. Is everyone happy with this so we can get moving onto the next step. We seem to be making no progress the past 5 days. If you are all happy to go with what we have then I will copy and paste into our powerpoint shell which I've posted into our pages and file area. Added a small note about food outlets and the feeder school for the refuge in penrith. Is this appropriate for the context. May help establish why we are picking nutrition etc as our health priority area. As a group, can we have this context completed by Sunday night i possible so we can start next week fresh with the next step. Cheers, Tammy

Hi Girls,
I'm really happy with what has been put forward for the context analysis. We have covered all the relevant points and come up with a very comprehensive context analysis. Sorry for the lack of response this week. Been really really crazy but hoping it will calm down before I go on prac in 2 weeks time. I've got a few hours of study time carved out today so I'm happy to start researching the next step. I'll post what I come up with and everyone can have a look through. I also just wanted to know if we have decided on how to divide up the audio requirements. I too have used audacity with another unit and found it really easy to use. I didn't even need to really consult my sound engineer husband (very proud of myself :D). I guess something to discuss as well is do we all want to "approve" the script before we record and add it in or will the person in charge of recording come up with the content as well.
Cheers, Melina

Hi Everyone,
Context Analysis is done and is updated in our powerpoint presentation in the files and folders as EDPE346-Group 27-3. I just completed the slides but will do the audio tomorrow night. Let me know if you would like any changes to the context analysis powerpoint slide....We are now working on our Focus Area which you will see a page for it in the right hand side menu. Please contribute information about our focus area - childhood obesity. We will need to pull together so we have a balanced and equal input from all group members. Melina has made a great start! I will add some info in the next day or two. Cheer, Tammy

Hi everyone, sorry I had read and was happy with the context analysis, my internet is very slow at the moment, so impossible to get much done. I have just rung Telstra and upped my data limit. So I should be back to normal in about 24 hours, so it will be easier for researching. Again very sorry and frustrating.
